Not knowing how to study for a test makes high school so much harder than it needs to be. Even straight-A students are often getting it wrong.
I don’t blame them. Schools don’t teach you how to study. And when you think about it, it’s really not so obvious.
How do you make sure you’ll know the right things?
And how can you tell when you’ve studied enough?
For most high-performing students these days, no amount of studying is enough. When a test looms they live in a constant state of anxiety, memorizing way more than is necessary — and forgetting most of it the day after the test.
Other kids get discouraged because all that hard work doesn’t even pay off. They prepare for weeks and still perform below their potential. It’s not that they aren’t smart enough; it’s that there are blind spots in their study process.
And then of course, there are students who can’t seem to study until the very last minute. Cramming might pay off once and a while, but more often than not, learning in a state of overwhelm leads to disappointing results.
The biggest problem with all of these bad study habits?
When you don’t know how to study, you don’t truly synthesize and integrate what you learn in school. Meaning, you take in information without building your working knowledge.
And while high schoolers can get by on memorizing information, that will absolutely not work in college, where exams are less about data retention and more about demonstrating the quality of your thinking.
