Academic Biography

Nicole is a MD/PhD student studying neuroscience at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine. She is a recent recipient of the American Academy of Neurology Medical Student Experience at the Annual Meeting scholarship, and a current tutor for preclinical medical students and for USMLE STEP 1. She serves on the board of the John B. Graham Medical Student Research society and is an active member of the UNC Advocates for Inclusion in Medicine and Science. She has attended the Association of Advocates for Women in Science and Medicine conference at Tulane University.

In medical school she is passionate about treating psychiatric and neurologic disease and providing care to uninsured and under-insured populations. Her proudest involvement is as the previous director and current member of the healthcare team for SHAC Bridge to Care, the portion of UNC’s student clinic dedicated to caring for patients with chronic healthcare diagnoses.

Prior to medical school, she worked as a research technician in Dr. Bernardo Sabatini’s Lab at Harvard Medical School and the Howard Hughes Medical Institute for two years. She also won the Leader in Service Award from Boston Healthcare for the Homeless for her role beginning a weekly women’s clinic in 2018. During her gap years she also served as a mentor for the Dana Farber Science Enrichment Program, where she designed health disparities curriculum and worked with local high school students.

Personal Biography

Nicole is a Pacific Northwest native from Woodinville, Washington and loves rock climbing, playing ultimate frisbee, biking, and hiking with her dog Jak (after the JAK-STAT signaling pathway!) in her free time. As an undergraduate she played 3 years of club ultimate frisbee and served on the executive boards of her sorority, Sigma Kappa; the neuroscience honor society, Nu Rho Psi; and the service organization, Generation Citizen.

She is also a dual Swiss and US citizen and loves to travel. Before medical school she took a solo trip to Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, and Singapore! Her favorite travel partner is her mom and together they have traveled to Switzerland, France, Spain, Croatia, Germany, Austria, Bermuda, Mexico, and numerous US destinations.
